A ‘Taste of Culture’ returns to UNCP campus

Keeping in the tradition of celebrating diversity on the campus of UNCP, students and faculty are preparing for the annual A Taste of Culture festival. 

This year’s festival will be the 13th coordinated by students and members of the student activities office. 

“The main purpose is to bring cultures together and have samples of each one,” said Robert Cooper, associate director of student affairs.     

Each year the cultural backgrounds of UNCP students and faculty as well as community members are displayed through a variety of food samples and entertainment. 

The musical celebrations generally consist of dance performances from the Latin American, Native American, African American and  Japanese cultures as well as a vast array of talented vocalists.

Abdul Ghaffar, director of student affairs, said that 500 people typically attend the festival each year.

He said that student participation guarantees good attendance by students.        

Planning for A Taste of Culture begins in the summer as the student activities office searches for dates to schedule the event. 

Those who are interested in exhibiting their culture start to fill out participation forms from the student activities office located in Room 220 of the Chavis University Center.

The celebration this spring takes place on April 19 at 10 a.m. on the lawn of the University Center.
