The Student Publications Board selected Scott Ammons as the 2005-2006 editor of The Pine Needle and co-editors Daniela Newland and Mark Schulman for The Aurochs.
Ammons, 33, a mass communications major, was a senior staff writer on this semester’s Pine Needle covering breaking news stories, including the UNCP steering committee’s report to the NCAA and the Provost’s decision to head University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
Ammons said his goal is to strengthen the connection The Pine Needle has with the community, both on and off the UNCP campus.
“My goal is to make our newspaper the envy of all college newspapers,” he said.
Ammons said as editor he will listen to staff members and get feedback in order to make The Pine Needle the best it can be.
According to Dr. Judy Curtis, Student Publications Board chair, it was a difficult decision. “The Board praised the work of current editor Kelly Griffith,” Curtis said. “We had three strong applicants for Pine Needle editor.”
Newland, 31, a native of Ostrhauderfehn, Germany, has worked on The Aurochs this semester. The senior English major has experience with non-fiction writing. She told the Board she would like to improve her poetry knowledge during her time as editor.
Schulman, 30, brings several years of experience to his position as co-editor. He has worked on The Aurochs this semester and has written for the literary magazine for two years. He has also worked three years on The Pine Needle as Opinion, Sports, Campus Life and Assistant Editors.
Schulman said, “I want to continue the positive progression of The Aurochs and build on the success of previous editors. I am looking forward to being The Aurochs co-editor because the magazine allows students to display their creative efforts.”
