Faculty Senate supports students’ rights

Faculty senate members went a step further to shield students’ rights on April 6 when they unanimously passed a resolution against parent/professor conferences at UNCP.
Dr. Breeden Blackwell presented his idea for a parent/professor day at UNCP to the faculty senate on March 2.
After hearing Black-well’s proposal, the Executive Committee of the Faculty Senate moved quickly to draft a resolution which opposed parent/professor conferences and presented it to the senate for approval.
After a minor change was made to the resolution, Faculty Senate Chair Dr. Jesse Peters called for a vote by a show of hands.
Without hesitation a sea of hands reached toward the sky in unison to show support against parent/professor day at UNCP, an issue that has been deemed by some as a direct violation of students’ rights.
A portion of the resolution states, “Now, therefore be it resolved that the Faculty Senate of the University of North Carolina at Pembroke firmly rejects the idea of developing and implementing parent/professor conferences at UNCP in any organized fashion.”
Now that the resolution has passed the senate, Peters will hand-deliver it to the Board of Trustees on April 28.
Dr. Peters jokingly said, “If I don’t return, you know where to look for me.”
