Parking issues continue for students

Parking is a problem for students on campus. There are lots for resident students, commuter students and faculty/staff as well as general lots, but finding a space is oftentimes a problem.
Another problem students face is receiving tickets for parking in the wrong lot. Since August, 4400 tickets have been written for parking in the wrong lot, according to Officer Betty Strickland of Campus Police.
The penalties for the different tickets vary.
“It all depends on if residents are in commuters, because that’s a restricted zone. A lot [of students] I’m catching because they’re not registered and their trying to use their old decals,” Strickland said.
According to the parking regulation guide, only faculty/staff and commuters are allowed to park in the general lots if their lots are full.
Residential students have six parking lots to choose from, some of wh-ich are never full. Park-ing lot 24a, by the track, holds 86 spaces and is never full, according to Strickland.
“I lost some spaces in lot 9 because of construction, but I’ll get them back. Mostly what you see full is 16 behind the student center.” Strickland said.
Resident students can only park in resident parking lots. Also, the spaces closest to the building fill up quickly because some students don’t want to walk.
However, there are always open spaces in resident lots, said Strickland. |
