The English E. Jones Athletic Center was dedicated on Feb. 2 following $8.8 million worth of modifications, improvements and reconstruction.
“This is truly a beautiful building that can serve as a showcase,” Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Dr. Roger Brown said.
There was a lot of work that went into providing the facility for our enjoyment. The original gymnasium was dedicated Jan. 18, 1973, and had a price tag of $2.3 million. At the time this was a very large amount of money and did not come easily.
In addition to the original 89,000 square foot athletic center, he was also responsible for the GPAC, Business Education building, Sampson-Livermore Library and the expansion of Old Main helping to form what we see as our campus today.
The construction done to the Jones Athletic Center has added 32,000 square feet to the building bringing the grand total to a staggering 121,000 square feet. This houses two gyms, a pool, weight room, offices, classrooms, new fitness equipment and racquetball courts.
“I hope everyone has a chance to tour this really great building. The growth and change we have seen is something we can truly be proud of,” Chancellor Allen C. Meadors said.
“When we conclude a project like this it is because of the cooperation of countless people,” he said. |
