“The driver was going east on Old Main Drive, and someone hollered at him and he backed up. Two females were crossing the road, one [Somia Beckford] made it across. Sheena Riddick got hit,” said Cpl. Stephen Brooks of UNCP Campus Police.

According to Brooks, the driver said he was going approximately 7-10 mph when he hit her.

After the accident, Riddick was taken to Southeastern General Hospital in Lumberton where she remained until approximately 7 p.m.

She complained of “soreness in her right knee,” according to Brooks. On Jan. 26, Riddick was still sore, according to Brooks.

The driver didn’t receive a ticket, and no charges have been filed at this time.

However, Campus Police have declined to release the name of the driver.

“He was at fault, and he knew it,” Brooks said.

Brooks warns students to pay attention when driving.

“Pay attention to pedestrians and crosswalks. Some of these drivers are unbelievable. This was an accident that could have been avoided,” Brooks said.
