Cold weather strikes UNCP campus

By David McGee
Staff Writer

Many students have noticed the weather as of late has been quite unusual. It is not often that it is warm enough to wear a t-shirt in January. The warm weather was great but unfortunately the temperature plummeted quickly. Luckily for most North Carolinians the majority of the serious winter weather missed us completely, except for some minor flurries that did not effect anyone’s day dramatically.

Steve McCausley, a UNCP student said, “The weather has just been a shock to the system, I was hoping that winter would hold out a little longer. Maybe miss us altogether this year.”

The Northeast did not share our luck, however. Much of the Northeast was blanketed in crippling blizzards with the band of snow reaching from the Great Lakes to New England. Some places in Massachusetts received 38 inches of snow, the most in the Northeast. Places in New England reported 6-foot snowdrifts, and across the harbor from Boston houses were layered with sheets of ice.

It is easier to get sick during the winter season, especially with alternating warm and cold weather. To be safe and avoid becoming sick here are a couple of simple steps to keep you healthy. Eat well and get your vitamins. Juices are good, especially orange juice, which is high in vitamin C.

Dress warmly when outside and try to stay dry. Do not share drinks with others. They may be ill even if they do not seem like it.

Finally, exercise is the best way to keep your immune system strong.
