The
2003-2004 Distinguished Speaker Series is proud to present Dave
Barry, a humor columnist for The Miami Herald, on Dec. 2 at 7 p.m.
in GPAC.
Barry, who has
been with The Miami Herald since 1983 and has won a Pulitzer Prize
for commentary in 1988, loves writing about humor because getting
facts correct does not matter to him.
“The fact
that you don’t need to be accurate,” is what Barry said,
on his official website, to describe why he loves writing humor
pieces.
Barry’s
columns appear in more than 500 newspapers in the United States
and abroad.
Barry has also written a total of 24 books.
“Dave
Barry Talks Back,” “Dave Barry is from Mars and Venus,”
“Dave Barry Slept Here: A Sort of History of the United States,”
Dave Barry is NOT Making This Up,” “Dave Barry Turns
50” and “Dave Barry in Cyberspace” are just some
of his most popular books.
Two of his books
and the irreverent life and times of this funny man were used as
the basis for the CBS-TV sitcom “Dave’s World.”
Barry believes
that if you want to get into the journalism world you need to read
and write all the time.
“Read a lot and write a lot,” Barry said on his official
website. “Above all, get practical work experience at real
newspapers; this is much more important than academic courses.”
From politics
to the species of individuals known as “guys,” Barry
is sure to have you leaving GPAC with a huge smile on your face
and a better appreciation of how funny life can be.
This show is sure to be an enormous hit with all ages.
Tickets are
$10 for the general public, $5 for faculty and staff and free for
students.
