The new Wal-Mart Supercenter in Pembroke opens Oct. 26.

Jose Garcia, a junior mass communications major, said he thinks the store is a great addidtion to Pembroke.

"People won’t have to travel to Lumberton to go to Wal-Mart. It’s like a next door neighbor," Garcia said.

The Pembroke Wal-Mart will be similar in size to the Lumberton branch and will have a Subway inside.

According to Matt Hoover, a sophomore computer science major who will be working at the new Wal-Mart, the new location will primarily focus on the college market, at least as far as promotions and merchandise are concerned.

Hoover transferred from the Lumberton Wal-Mart where he has worked for over 15 months as a wireless sales associate.

Hoover said when he was given the option to work at the Pembroke location, he jumped at the chance.

"Ten dollars in gas will last me two weeks now instead of two days," Hoover said.

According to Hoover, the store is in the final stages of preparation for the opening day.

"All the shelving is up. All that is left to do is to put the merchandise on the shelves," he said.

Hoover said that the experience of opening a new Wal-Mart is very different from any previous Wal-Mart experiences he has ever had. It is much harder work, he said.

"There are a lot of tedious things that you don’t always think about,” Hoover said. “But Wal-Mart has everything planned out all the way down to the notches on the shelves."
