Luck, who is currently working on his B.S. in Journalism at
UNCP, is the new winner of the College Division Editorial Cartoon
Category of the North Carolina Center for Voter Education Go Vote!
Contest.
Luck,
who has been drawing ever since he could hold a crayon says, “I
was telling stories using pictures before I could even write.”
Thus,
Luck has been drawing ever since. Luck received his bachelor’s
degree in Art Concentration Design in 2000 at The University of
North Carolina at Greensboro and came to UNCP last January.
Since Luck has been at UNCP he has “meshed”
greatly with the journalism professors, Drs.
Tony and Judy Curtis, and The Pine Needle staff.
“The Curtis’ wanted me to try my hand
at the political cartoons for The Pine Needle and I’ve been
doing the cartoons in every issue of The Pine Needle since January,”
Luck said.
So far, Luck has done about a dozen cartoons and
is the opinion editor for The Pine Needle.
The cartoon that won the contest is actually a slightly
altered version of a cartoon that appeared in The Pine Needle last
semester. But, Luck does not just put all of his focus into political
cartoons. His past endeavors of selling his cartoons as comic books
started out as a hobby. But this endeavor was short lived when Luck
realized that he was not going to gain any money from it, so he
decided to continue drawing cartoons as a hobby and get a “real
job.”
