  Library introduces 20 new laptops

By Mark Schulman
Campus Life Editor

The Sampson-Livermore Library has added 15 wireless Compaq laptops and five wireless Apple iBooks to keep UNCP up to speed in the constantly evolving technological world.

These laptops will enhance the information access and resource sharing for active UNCP students, faculty and staff while in the library.

The new computers were added after the Systems Staff, headed by Cindy Saylor, introduced a pilot project last year using five wireless laptops. The response was incredible as the computers were continuously checked out, proving that the university needed to increase its wireless network capabilities within the library.

Patrons of the library can simply go to the circulation desk with a UNCP identification card, sign a loan agreement each check-out and obtain a Compaq laptop for use. For those who prefer the Apple iBooks, he or she must be trained and authorized by the Digital Academy Team to use the iBooks.

“We want to stay on the cutting edge of technology,” Saylor said. “And we provide that technology to students to help them with their work.”

Libraries across the country provide accessibility to its customers, according to Saylor. At the Sampson-Livermore library, students can set their laptop on a mobile workstation and wheel it through the stacks of books as they conduct research.

The laptops also have the capability to burn CD’s and DVD’s for the students who wish to embellish his or her personal multimedia interests.

The library also has upgraded the Multimedia Room with three Power Macs, printers, scanners (including a tabloid-size scanner) and an iBook docking station. Students, who are authorized to use Apple equipment, can perform media integration including photo, music and digital editing with these computers.

“Any student can come in the Multimedia Room and have everything at their fingertips,” Saylor said.

Students can obtain the key to the Multimedia Room that is located in the library in room 204 from the circulation desk.

Students who own their own laptop and have a wireless card can also share the library’s network.

“Once people learn this technology is available, they’ll learn to use it,” Saylor said.

The software on the laptops allows information to be saved during the session and erases it once the computer’s shut down and restarted.

Only current UNCP students, faculty and staff have the opportunity to check out the laptops from the circulation desk in two-hour increments and must stay within the library.

Late fees will be applied as well as terms of liability and limitations.
