  Tri Sigmas help local children

By Lindsay Ritzmann

Sigma Sigma Sigma, The UNCP Delta Theta Chapter, has been known for their thriving efforts and support to help children at the UNC-Chapel Hill Hospital. The Tri Sigmas are now bringing their caring network closer.

The Tri Sigma’s are donating as much time as they can to the children at the Pembroke chapter of the Boys & Girls Club. They help them with their homework, play and sometimes teach them life long lessons about strength, love and growing up.Sigma Sigma Sigma member Ashley Smith entertains children at the Boys and Girls club. “I am tickled pink that the Sigmas are volunteering so much time to us, they are a God send,” Rhonda Faircloth, an employee of the Pembroke Chapter of the Boys & Girls Club, said. “The first time they came they helped elementary school children with their spelling tests, and any trouble on their homework, and the employees of the Boys & Girls Club are so grateful and thankful that they want to help out, even if it’s 15 minutes it helps.”

The number of children that are attending the Boys & Girls Club is expanding tremendously, and it is hard for each staff member to give all the attention they want to one child and focus entirely on that child’s needs and wants.

Lauren Hardin, one of the newest sisters to Tri Sigma, has been volunteering a lot of her spare time to helping the children out with their homework.

“I feel that the volunteering that we are doing is very rewarding,” Hardin said. “All the children are very receptive to the kindness that we display to them. In a way it helps us just as much as we are helping them.”

The Tri Sigmas are now working on other community projects such as a can food drive, clothing drive and making Valentine Day cards for the children at the UNC-Chapel Hill hospital.

The employees at the Boys & Girls club want everyone to know that if one person wants to make a difference, only 15 minutes would change a small child’s life.
