Wall-to-wall
nature scenes welcome customers to Mikoto Express, a hibachi Japanese
restaurant, that opened on Sept. 19. UNCP’s logo looms on
one wall like a giant sun, and chairs and linoleum tiles correspond
with the school colors.
Located in the
same plaza as Movie Gallery, the restaurant is often crowded during
meal times. There were almost 60 patrons on this particular evening.
“I can’t
wait for the newness of the restaurant to wear off so I don’t
have to wait so long for my food,” said local used car salesman
Demetrius Locklear.
The menu lists
chicken, shrimp and steak combination plates, sushi and side orders.
Prices range from $1.50 for a side of fried rice or mushrooms to
$9.50 for a “samurai special.”
At present,
only cash is accepted. Former UNCP athletic department employee
Scott Haith said, “It would be nice if they entered the 21st
century and accept a check card.”
While waiting,
customers can watch a chef prepare their food through a giant window.
Mikoto is open
Monday through Saturday 11 a.m. - 9 p.m., and Sunday 11:30 a.m.
- 8 p.m.
Patrons can
also call the restaurant at 521-0068 and pick up their order at
a drive-thru window at the side of the restaurant.
