Intern helps at Olympics

By Winifred Winston
Staff Writer

During my internship at Special Olympics North Carolina this past summer, I assisted in media efforts to publicize the 2003 Special Olympics World Summer Games held in Dublin, Ireland, and three major events held in Raleigh, N.C., including the 2003 SONC Summer Games.

My responsibilities included writing biographical profiles; researching, writing and uploading the website content for the “Athlete of the Week;” editing and revising media alerts and press releases; calling local radio, TV stations and newspapers to pitch news stories; and assembling press kits and securing media coverage for sports competitions and special events.

At the 2003 SONC Summer Games, which was held on North Carolina State University’s campus, I watched athletes compete in powerlifting and track & field. I also watched athletes compete at the 2003 Equestrian Championships, which I had never seen before.
