  NAACP makes debut

By Kristen Grimes
Staff Writer

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is establishing a student organization at UNCP. The organization’s goals are to aid, benefit, and enhance the civil rights of African Americans and other minorities.

This is the first attempt by students to establish an NAACP chapter at UNCP. Students involved in organizing the chapter feel that an increasing minority population at the school requires an organization that is geared towards the needs of diverse students.

The UNCP chapter hopes to look at issues concerning minorities in order to bring about necessary changes within the school by “informing students about the problems and concerns that affect African Americans and other minorities, and eliminating racial prejudice,” according to Natasha Oris-Thomas, spokeswoman for the UNCP chapter.

Because the NAACP strives for awareness within the local area, community service events and volunteer opportunities are also being planned.

The first meeting of Pembroke’s NAACP chapter was held Feb. 24 in the University Center lounge.

The inaugural meeting included information about the NAACP, and provided details about the goals of the organization.

Anyone interested in finding out more should contact Oris-Thomas at no0004@unp.edu.
