Have you seen
“American Idol” lately? If you have been tuned into
the very popular reality show, you may have seen a familiar face.
Charly Lowry,
a 20-year-old Pembroke native, followed her dreams all the way to
Atlanta, Ga. to compete in the new American Idol contest.
“It started
as a dream and is gradually becoming a reality,” Lowry said
on the American Idol website.
Competing among
70,000 other contestants, Charly sang “Proud Mary.”
Winning over
judges Paula and Randy with her charisma and only receiving minimum
criticism from Simon, she advanced with 117 others to the next level
in Hollywood.
In Hollywood
the contestants were knocked down to 32, and once again Lowry endured
the competition.
“I want
to be the American Idol because I possess many qualities and talents
that I want to share with the rest of the world,” Lowry said.
“I want to be a positive reflection of and an ambassador for
all Americans in more ways than one.”
Lowry proudly
told the judges that she is a member of the Lumbee Indian Tribe
of North Carolina and hopes to break some of the bad stereotypes
of Natives Americans.
She also has
participated in many local pageants and held the title of Junior
Ms. Lumbee.
Lowry’s
schedule is extremely busy with vocal training and studying the
guitar and piano.
Lowry, a sophomore,
is currently on leave from UNC-Chapel Hill. While on leave she is
a part-time student here at UNCP taking classes in American Indian
studies.
Her parents
are Greg and Delores Lowry. Lowry’s mother is an employee
here at UNCP and is very proud of her. She hopes everyone here at
UNCP will give her daughter their love and support by voting for
her.
