The weather was picturesque and the money poured out in support of the second annual GPAC golf tournament held on Oct. 1 at Pinecrest Country Club in Lumberton.

According to GPAC Executive Director Patricia Fields, the event raised over $6,000.

“We had 70 paid and our limit is 72 players,” Fields said. She added that she was pleased with the support that people had shown the tournament.

The money will be used to provide funding for the numerous shows GPAC offers throughout the year.

Each tournament participant paid a fee of $75 per person.

The individuals were grouped into teams of four players each. Each team competed for the grand prizes.

Once arriving at the tournament, patrons could choose to purchase other items to support GPAC, including raffle tickets.

Area businesses and visiting celebrities donated items raffled off, including memorabilia autographed by rock ‘n’ roll icon Chubby Checker, gift certificates, books and small backpacks.

Among those participating in the tournament were Chancellor Charles Jenkins, Provost Charles Harrington and Vice Chancellor for Business Affairs R. Neil Hawk.

Dr. Diane O. Jones, vice chancellor for student affairs, was present to welcome participants.

According to Fields, the first place winning team of the tournament received $800, the second place team received $600 and the third place team received $400.

The Pembroke Chamber of Commerce won first place, with each of the four team members receiving $200.

A sandwich lunch for the participants was provided by Sodexo and a yellow tent was assembled for people to eat under.

Fields said that she thought the event went well.
