Students aid at Odum anniversary

The Baptist Children’s Home, referred to as the Odum Home, offered a chance for the community to work together on Oct. 13 to raise funds during their 65th anniversary.

The Odum Home provides foster care for children from the ages of six to 21. The anniversary was the first held for the Odum Home.

UNCP’s National Council for Negro Women set up a table selling baked goods with other community businesses and groups to help raise money for Odum.

NCNW member Selina Craig works as a counselor at the Odum Home and initiated the organizations support.

Member Kristina Chaney said NCNW often entertains the youth living at Odum by taking the youth to UNCP sports games or other events.

The cookies and cakes that were being sold were baked the night before the festival by both NCNW and the youth of the Odum House.

Senior Lyndsey Daniels, a former volunteer, also attended in support of the cause.

Daniels described volunteering as being like a “big sister” to the children.

Late in the afternoon, the children performed several contemporary Christian songs for the businesses and guests.

“We’re just representing Odum Home in a good way,” said Latifah McFaydee, 13.

Odum youth enjoyed funnel cakes and face painting with the community.
