BSU offers commuters themed lunches

Students, staff and commuters paid $3 for lunch Feb. 13 at the Baptist Student Union (BSU) House, as part of the weekly commuter lunch series.

The commuter’s lunch is run by the BSU members and is held every other Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Approximately 120-175 people attend the lunch every other week, according to President of the Baptist Student Union Kyle Jackman.

“It’s really worth it. It’s just sad how some people don’t see this opportunity,” freshman Darius Johnson said.

Jackman said the proceeds earned from the commuter’s lunch are used to help raise money for students’ summer missions across the U.S. and overseas.

The Baptist Student Union was formed in 1940 and has been traveling since 1986 to minister the Word of God throughout the world and give help to the needy, Jackman said.

The BSU provides a different theme of food each week, from Mexican, to hamburgers and fries and then Southern cooking.

On Feb. 13, the theme was Italian Feast. There was a variety of food served on the buffet table: spaghetti, macaroni, garlic bread,
ravioli and other sorts of pastas served with Alfredo and marinara sauce. Drinks and dessert are also included in the
price.

“The food here is cheap,” graduate student Justin Jacobs said. “You get a lot and the food is better than the cafeteria.”

The food is supplied and delivered by a group of churches known as the Burk Swamp Baptist Organization and is funded by statewide organizations that pledge money for scholarships across North Carolina.
