Conference on Southeast Indians attracts scholars

Scholars from across the nation will take part in the second Indian conference at UNCP.

The Southeast Indian Studies Conference focuses on tradition, identity and recognition  April 20-21.

Seven sessions provide forums for discussions of culture, history, art, health and contemporary issues of Native Americans in the Southeast.

In addition to presentations by UNCP faculty and Lumbee tribal leaders, professors from The State University of New York, Binghamton; Jacksonville State University; University of Minnesota; Mississippi State University; and Vanderbilt University will make presentations in the areas of metaphysics, symbolism, warfare and captivity, totems, legal and social status, identity, gaming, women's health and other concerns.

Deadline for registration is April 17. Lunch is included in the $30 registration fee.

April 20

-Registration: 8-8:30 a.m.

-Opening Ceremony: 8:30-9 a.m.

-Welcome: 9-10:15 a.m.

-Session I: 10:30-11:45 a.m.

-Session II: 11:45-12:30 p.m.

-Lunch: 12:30-1:15 p.m.

-Keynote Address: 1:15-2:30 p.m.

-Session III: 2:45-4 p.m.

-Session IV: 4-5 p.m. 

-Visit Native American Resource Center (UNCP)

April 21

-Morning Refresher & Opening Ceremony: 8:30-9 a.m.

-Session V: 9-10:15 a.m.

-Session VI: 10:30-12 p.m.

-Lunch: 12-1 p.m.

-Session VII: 1-2:15 p.m.

-Wrap-up: 2:15-3 p.m.
