Tyner receives honors for his passion for history

Blake Tyner, 37, of Maxton, and the administrative assistant of the art department recently won four different awards for his passion, talent and extensive knowledge on the history of Robeson County.

These awards were for his promotional brochure for the Robeson County Museum, his book, “Robeson County in Vintage Postcards,” and his work with Janette Hopper, who is the chair and associate professor of art.
Tyner worked with Hopper to mount an exhibit at Bellamy Mansion in Wilmington, N.C., entitled “Secrets of the Swamps.”
“This book would be interesting to those not having a deep interest in history; however, it is a treasure trove for those who do,” the judges said about Tyner’s book.
He is curator and executive director of the Robeson County History Museum. Tyner’s love for his county’s history has become unbridled in his published books, “Robeson County in Vintage Postcards,” “Images of America,” which won the 2005 Willie Parker Peace Award, and “Goin’ For a Soldier-Abstracts of Vital Records for Antebellum Southern Soldiers from the Fayetteville Observer 1818-1850.”
Tyner graduated in December 2005 with a B.A. in History and a minor in Public Relations.
In his time as a student at UNCP he was a participant in the University Honors College, Gamma Beta Phi, where he was the chapter president, Alpha Sigma Lambda, Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, and a University marshal.
He is working on a Master’s of Library Science at North Carolina Central University and N.C. State.
He is a member of many historical affiliations, such as the North Carolina Society of Archivists, where he is president-elect, Preservation Maxton Foundation, Inc., where he is the Secretary-Treasurer, and North Carolina History of Museum Associates.
When he’s not winning awards, working, or writing books Tyner enjoys spending time with wife, Bess, and son renovating a new home.
