Golf event raises funds for undergrad travel By Dan KellySports Editor The Pembroke Undergraduate Research Center raised about $2,600 on Sept. 16 by hosting a fundraising golf tournament at Deercroft Golf Club near Wagram, N.C. The focus of the event was to fund travel opportunities for undergraduates to present their research at academic conferences. “State funds have certain stipulations and one of the stipulations is that it’s difficult to use them for student travel and sustenance,” said Dr. Lee Phillips, associate director for undergraduate research. “In looking at fundraising possibilities and the amount of fun that could be had during the fundraiser, I thought a golf tournament would be a good idea,” he said. The first-place team was lead by Charles Miller at -16; Ronnie Chavis’ team was second at -15 and Mike Smith’s team placed third at -12. There were 46 total participants at the tournament, broken down into 10 teams of four and two teams of three. The field was awarded about $1,500 in prize packages, contributed by UNCP and area businesses. Phillips said he was proud of the first PURC-hosted golf tournament, though he saw room for improvement. “I’d like to see better involvement from the UNCP faculty and staff in the future, but you know, this was the first go,” Phillips said. |
