Library announces winners of 2007 Poetry and Short Prose Contest

The Sampson-Livermore Library annouced the winners of the eighth annual poetry and short prose contest.

Amanda Merry of Southport, N.C., took first place in the UNCP student category with her poem titled “The First Degree Tournament.”
Francis Bayog of Durham, N.C., took second place with a poem titled “No Place for Poets.”
Carine Francois of Orlando, Fla., and Morgan Lucas of Durham, N.C., tied for third place. Francois’s poem was titled “Reading Between the Lines” while Lucas’s poem was titled “The First Law of Nature.”
Alexandra Herndon from the Fayetteville Academy took first place in the high school student category with her poem “Being a Teenage Girl.”
Jessie Locklear from Purnell Swett High School took second with the poem “A Soldier’s Prayer.”
Zachary Ward from Dillon Christian Academy took third place with the poem “Warrior’s Ride.”
Robert Arndt of Pembroke, N.C., took first prize in the open category with his poem “Ezekiel at the Blackboard.” Alicia Jiles of Lumberton, N.C., took second place with her poem “Charlatan.”
Jenny Bruns of Fayetteville, N.C., Yvonne Dial of Pembroke, N.C., and Stella Whitlock of Fayetteville, N.C., tied for third place.
Bruns’s poem was titled “Man-Made Death.” The title of Dial’s poem was “That Visit Home.” Whitlock’s poem was titled “Those Soap Opera Blues.”
The contest received more than 100 entries this year, according to contest coordinator Jean Sexton.
“The number of entries in the high school division was especially pleasing,” Sexton said.
This year’s winners read their works during Library Week on April 18 in the Main Reading Room of the Sampson-Livermore Library.
