• ‘Letters Home’ takes audience
on emotional rollercoaster ride
The war gripping play
“Letters Home” was performed
to 140 audience
members of students, faculty
and military veterans
Nov. 16 in GPAC.
The play depicted the
lives of multiple soldiers
who served in Iraq during
the beginning of
“Operation Iraqi
Freedom.” The play is
inspired by a New York
Times Opinion article
entitled “The Things they
wrote.” That article later
on became an HBO documentary
called “Last
Letters Home.”

• H1N1 vaccines available on
campus for students, faculty
About 200 students have taken
the H1N1 flu vaccine on campus for
free.
There are two types of vaccines
that can be administered. The types
of vaccines currently being administered
to students and faculty are
the nasal spray or a H1N1 vaccine
shot which are being given. The
H1N1 vaccine is safe when using
proper precautions, explained Cora
Bullard, the director of Student
Health Services.

instructor fits in with campus community
In early October,
Master Sgt. Clinton Hill
began instructing UNCP's
Reserve Officer Training
Corps cadets on the basics
of military science and,
according to Cadet
Bernice Stratton, a junior
in the ROTC program, "he
fits right in."
According to Hill,
experience leading soldiers
as an Army Boot
Camp and Professional
Leadership Development
Course instructor 22 years
in the military helped him
hone his teaching skills
and prepared him for his
new teaching position at
UNCP.

Mary Livermore Library.
The book contains
191 photographs that
show how people in North
Carolina live; it also
shows historical events
that took place in North
Carolina.

The Stylistics come to
town, there’s no question
on whether or not you go -
you just go.
When the group
appeared as part of the
Nostalgia Concert Series

of all ages gathered in
GPAC to take a stroll
down memory lane.

Famed billiard player
Ewa Laurance, known
worldwide as “The
Striking Viking,”
appeared in front of more
than 100 people in the
Hawk’s Nest Game Room
in the U.C. on Sept. 30, as
an event planned during
Homecoming week.
She performed an
exhibition, offered challenge
matches with students
and gave everyone
in attendance 8x10 autographed
color pictures to
take home as souvenirs.

| • Harmony Walk bridges ethnic differences
Not as many people
attended UNCP’s sixth
annual Harmony Walk on
Sept. 16 this year, but it
was still a celebration.
The rainy weather
held off until the end of
the event, permitting the
Harmony Walk to be a
success.
Before the rain began,
students and faculty celebrated
diversity one step
at a time in front of the
University’s water
amphitheatre. The ceremony
followed with a
unity walk from the
amphitheatre to the UC
Annex led by the UNCP
marching band. A banner
competition was judged
during the walk and
results were announced in
the Annex. The National
Council of Negro Women
won the competition.
