SACC's third annual Faculty Appreciation Night a success

One professor from the 25 departments at UNCP were chosen by student athletes based on the students' most positive classroom experience.
This was the third year the program has been put on by SACC.
Women's tennis coach Robin Langley, adviser of SACC, said the reason for putting on the program is that "it is difficult to be a student athlete; it is very time consuming. So it is important to recognize professors who are willing to work with our athletes."
First time receiver of the award Dr. Anthony Curtis, from the Department of Mass Communication, said, "By getting this award, I feel like I have succeeded in my job as a teacher."
After 40 years of teaching, he is grateful for the appreciation by student athletes.
Mary Zets, a biology lecturer and a receiver of the award all three years, said that receiving this award gave her a "warm, fuzzy feeling."
"So many of my past and current students congratulated me the next day as well as students I did not recognize," she added.
Zets said many of her best students are athletes and that she likes to see those students working hard and "not living up to the jock stereotype."
She also said she enjoys it when she knows students are getting a positive experience in her classroom.
"I like it when a student is able to take something away from my class to get through the rest of school and life," she added.
Alexa Mooney, vice president of SACC, said there is a huge benefit from putting on the program. She thinks it makes a difference in professors' jobs and helps to maintain a positive relationship between the student athletes and professors.
"They are not just teachers; they are someone to look up to," she added.
Langley said she would like to see the program continue in future years because the faculty is very deserving of it.
"So many go above and beyond, and we want them to know they are appreciated," she added.
