SGA okays budget, preps for elections

The Student Government Association approved its 2012-13 budget, continued planning its voter registration campaign, informed freshmen about upcoming senator elections and approved a new at-large senator at its Sept. 19 meeting.
SGA budget
Treasurer Carson Cone presented the budget for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2013, at the meeting. Senators approved it unanimously. It contained:- Total base income and other revenues at $11,153
- $1,500 for organizational funding
- $2,593.95 for advertising and marketing, including $750 for T-shirts
- $3,656.05 for food, including $500 for the installation dinner and $2,250 for catering
- $2,653 for special projects, including $1,000 for the recent campus safety project with the Department of Police and Public Safety, and $1,153 for the upcoming voter registration project
- Total expenses at $11,080
- Total operational budget at $677
Freshman elections
Government Operations Committee Chair Shanez McDaniel welcomed about eight freshmen to the first of three interest meetings for freshmen elections at the Sept. 19 meeting.She said that freshman candidates must have a minimum 2.5 GPA and submit an application through OrgSync to be eligible to run.
Shanez said that SGA is "the representative for the student body," which focuses on "issues, concerns and the welfare of students." Election results will be announced around Oct. 1.
Voter registration
SGA President Robert Nunnery announced that the UNC Association of Student Governments approved his request for a $1,153 grant to use for voter registration promotion in October. The grant will be spent on food for a cookout, as well as 5,000 plastic cups and 5,000 bracelets to give to students throughout October to promote voter registration. SGA will also spend about $600 of its own money on the project.New at-large senator
SGA senators unanimously approved the addition of senior Lauren Bell as an at-large senator on Sept. 19.She is a transfer student who arrived at UNCP from Hollins University in spring 2011.
Bell is a psychology major and coordinator for diversity and Safe Zone training at the Office of Multicultural and Minority Affairs.
Bell said that UNCP is "stagnant" and wants to help the school remain competitive with other schools.
"A lot of people choose to sit around and complain, and I choose to do something or not complain at all," Bell said.
Grant approved
Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., treasurer Paul Marsh asked SGA at the meeting for a $200 grant to attend the fraternity's North Carolina State Conference in Durham on Sept. 28 and 29. Senators approved the grant with two dissenting votes, on the condition that Phi Beta Sigma collaborate with SGA in the future.One of the dissenters, Sen. Chris Powell, said he did not agree with a group unaffiliated with Greek Life giving money to a Greek organization.
"Although the conference will be beneficial for the one single Greek organization, I do not believe the majority of the student body whom are not Greek, should be footing the bill for an organization that is closed to the students whom ultimately will be paying for this conference," Sen. Powell said.
Article III, section 3.3-I of the SGA constitution says that one of the duties of the Student Senate is to "allocate funds to its constituents and programs." SGA adviser Preston Ramsey said that a student organization may ask for up to $500 in funding per school year.
