Avant Garde brings fashion, dance

Avant Garde. Sounds different right? That’s exactly what the 27 member group Avant Garde describes themselves as.

“[We’re] unorthodox. Different from the rest,” President Kameika Jones said.

On Oct. 25 students gathered in the UC Annex as Avant Garde presented “A Red Carpet Affair,” the fall modeling show.

Hosted by Sharisha “Lady Red” Fuller, the show was ready to begin. Dressed in their finest urban and dress wear the models ripped the runway showing “Hollywood at its finest.”

During a brief intermission, advisors Amanda Faulk and Lucy Hammonds along with Fashion Bug of Fayetteville, NC, NAACP and Middle Creek Creative School were recognized for their contribution to the success of the show.

The next round began with all the models dressed in red. The representation of red was to show respect to the groups’ loved ones that have passed on.

J.R. Maduako, Pembroke Idol winner, performed his latest song while the models prepared for the third round.

The ladies of Avant Garde dressed in pink and strutted to show support for the fight against breast cancer while the men calmed the crowd with a stormy performance to “Can You Stand the Rain?” by New Edition to show support of health awareness.

During the last segment the group performed in their Halloween costumes and then closed the show with a battle between the “Hoodstars and the Rockstars.”

“Fashion does not define what you are; it defines who you are,” said Jones.
