Blood drive attracts 60 donors

Students, faculty and staff filled the University Center on Jan. 24 to donate blood for patients in need.

The blood drive was a success and the Director of Student Services Cora Bullard said that they met their goal of more than 60 donors.

The morning started off with a bang with a dozen students, faculty and staff signing up to give blood.

UNCP Assistant Librarian Karen Fritts said she likes to donate blood as much as possible because she knows many people are in dire need of blood like she once was.

“Three years ago, I received 10 units of blood and ever since then that has made me want to help others and donate blood,” Fritts said.

There is a big need for blood in the United States right now, especially type O blood and students like sophomore Kendra Daniels said she doesn’t mind giving her blood and to give a helping hand.

“My body always makes blood so I can spare some blood to help others,” Daniels said.

The student health services sponsored the blood drive with the American Red Cross and with the help from the Student Government Association.

Student Government Community Service Chairperson Cassi Vinson said that SGA works on many community service projects and helps others like the student health services around campus.

“We help a lot of different organizations around campus and we thought that this was a good cause to help,” Vinson said.
