Cookout, comedians celebrate Native American Museum By Michael GrahamStaff Writer Students gathered at Old Main Nov. 8 for a reception and cookout that was held in honor of UNCP’s first “Native American Comedy Showcase,” a part of the school’s celebration of Native American Indian Month. Having been a former Miss South Dakota and former Miss America contestant, Shortbull was used to the stage. “The biggest challenge of comedy was realizing that it wasn’t just a walk in the park,” she said. “It turned out to be a whole lot of work.” The cookout attracted about 65 students and provided hot dogs and hamburgers for everyone that attended. Many students stayed around to meet the comedians and tour the Native American Resource Center. “It is a great way for students and teachers to come, eat and celebrate who we are at UNCP,” said Erin Berry, a senior who handles the promotions for ACE. First time This was the first time the school has hosted an exclusively Native American showcase, according to Kay Oxendine, the Student Government Association’s administrative assistant. “Hopefully it won’t be the last one either,” she said. |
