Zeta Phi Beta sponsors Blood Drive By Hannah SimpsonSenior Staff Writer Zeta Phi Beta sorrority and the Blood Donor Center collaborated on Nov. 1 to bring the Bloodmobile to UNCP. The drive was held in front of the Givens Performing Arts Center inside a large RV. It carried six beds and two screening rooms. “The good that comes out of (donating) can save people’s lives,” said phlebotomist Lanity Ray. Ray, an employee of The Blood Donor Center for five years, said that the center usually conducts blood drives only in Cumberland County. The purpose is to keep a blood supply for the surrounding communities on hand, Ray said. It is especially important for different races to donate blood, she said. The prospective goal for blood donation was 40 students. “We had 12 people sign up and collected five units of blood. I believe the location was a big factor in the number of people who signed up,” said Suzanne McLaurin, the mobile recruitment coordinator for The Blood Center. The Bloodmobile was parked in front of GPAC, out of mainstream walking paths for students. Signs in the shape of blood drops were posted by Zeta Phi Beta to create a path to the Bloodmobile. McLaurin said this was the only possible location due to construction surrounding the Chavis Center, where The Blood Center originally wanted the drive to be located. There was no other area that could accommodate the size of the Bloodmobile, she said. The Blood Donor Center is located in Fayetteville at 3357 Village Drive, in the Bordeaux Shopping Center and can be contacted at (910) 609-6300. |
