Entertainment branch of SGA changes its name By Marty AndersonStaff Writer The former Campus Activities Board, the entertainment branch of Student Government Association, has changed its name to Association of Campus Entertainment. Sonia Sledge, coordinator of ACE, said the new name was chosen mainly because of the common initials for two very different organizations. “The name CAB has been a great confusion over the years between our organization and the Campus Appeals Board. We thought it was necessary in order to eliminate any further disorientation for students,” Sledge said. She also noted that other schools in the UNC system have changed their campus entertainment association names to ACE as well, and that the change would help to unify the organizations on other campuses. “We needed an updated version of CAB,” said Robert Cooper, the director of student life. “The organization is still the same, but with a new year, new policies and new leadership, we thought an updated name was appropriate,” he said. ACE, originally called the Student Union Council, has changed its name a total of three times since the 1970s. “Looking back at the past of the campus entertainment board, there are comparatively more activities for students. This is due to the growth of enrollment, and through student fees, because of tuition,” said Dr. Diane Jones, vice chancellor for student affairs, who once was the Student Activities Director from 1989-93. “The quality and quantity of programming has progressed into a great attribute to the University,” she said. Although the title is new, their mission remains the same: to plan, organize and carry out a program of social activities. Members bring a variety of entertainment to campus, including comedians, game shows, carnivals and hypnotists. ACE also sponsors homecoming dances and movies. |
