Diversity Climate Survey is available online

Diversity Committee for Communities of Interest is encouraging the UNCP community to go online and take their Campus Diversity Climate Survey.
The committee is assessing the current campus’ climate and needs with respect to racial, cultural and ethnic diversity.
Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to share their experiences and ideas.
The survey will be available until Dec. 1 at www.uncp.edu/oma/.
“As of Oct. 25, there are only 50 students who have taken the survey and surprisingly they are all Caucasian students,” Office of Multicultural and Minority Affairs Director Robert L. Canida said.
Canida said in order for this survey to really assess the campus, the minorities need to get more involved.
He said the overall goal of the survey is to find potential red flags that might exist at UNCP.
The university will address all needs and concerns regarding students of color who feel they are not appreciated or minority faculty feeling they are getting lack of respect due to diversity issues, he said.
A total of 2,627 undergrad and graduate students made up the minority in Spring 2006 with African Americans first and Native Americans second.
As UNCP is growing every year in diversity and with the football team coming in 2007, Canida believes the minority will soon be the majority.
All responses to the survey are confidential and reported back to the recipient’s email address. To encourage participation people will automatically be entered to win a gift certificate upon completion of the survey.
An organization of students, faculty, staff and community members that come together to ensure students can take advantage of the university’s and community’s academic, cultural, social and economic resources, the committee will be sponsoring a cultural competence workshop in Spring 2007.
