SGA President Marvin Jacobs excited about the 2006-2007 school year at UNCP By Carol Franch SGA President Marvin “Tubby” Jacobs, looks toward the new year with excitement.
Jacobs also adds that the construction for the bookstore will be done this semester. The Annex and Oak Dorm will be completed a bit later, in summer of 2007. “I love doing what I get to do. I thank God for every task that I get to tackle,” Jacobs says. One task that Jacobs hopes to accomplish is to bring up the morale and spirit of the school. Jacobs is quick to mention the effectiveness of the SGA’s Senate. “I’m taking myself out of the forefront,” he says. He describes his view of the SGA Senate as the body, while he is easily recognized as the head or face of the SGA. He wants others to know that a lot of the work is done behind the scenes with little recognition for the senators themselves. “Without the body, the mind wouldn’t function,” he explains. He thanks Sonia Sledge, coordinator of Association of Campus Entertainment (ACE), formerly CAB. She and the board “have made everything so easy for SGA to focus even more on just getting stuff done around the campus,” he says. The staff of SGA had to do a bit of reorganizing earlier this summer when Terrell Jones, the vice president, got word that he would be sent to Iraq. He received his notice to leave a week before school began. “I can’t speak on his character enough,” Jacobs says. “He stayed here three weeks to make sure everything was taken care of.” At Convocation Aug. 30 Jacobs told students, “SGA is your voice.” He said, “I encourage you to take advantage of all the university has to offer.” |
