Relay For Life comes to UNCP

The kickoff for UNCP’s first Relay For Life event was held Feb. 7 in the Business Administration Building.
           
Relay For Life, which is scheduled to take place on April 20 -21, is an overnight event where people gather to help raise money for cancer survivors.
           
American Cancer Society Community Coordinator Linda Burney showed a video thanking all team captains, and athelete recognitions were made.
           
Karen Tew, a surviving cancer patient, spoke about her experience dealing with the disease.
           
William Stewart Thomas, instructor in the School of Business, delivered the mission statement and handed out team packets and hope bracelets.
           
Open discussions were made available for anyone who had questions about the event.
           
Neil Guin, Drew Davis and other members of the local Ruritan Club are responsible for helping make the event possible.
           
The goal of the event is for participants to form teams to raise money for cancer survivors.
           
Each team walks or runs around a track while keeping a member on the track at all times.
           
All proceeds raised from these events are donated to the American Cancer Society to help them continue to save the lives of cancer patients.
           
The event is strongly backed by the Ruritan Club, students and faculty, Guin said.           
           
The Ruritan Club is a service club found in small towns throughout the country. Its aim is to promote fellowship and goodwill among its members.
