Miss UNCP 2007 crowned

The announcements are in from the 2007 Miss UNCP Scholarship Pageant at The University of North Carolina on January 25.

Senior, Deidra Locklear, was crowned Miss UNCP 2007 on January 25. Junior, Jamee Hunt, was awarded Miss Congeniality and first runner-up, along with a $500 scholarship.

Senior Colleen Fink placed second runner-up with a $300 scholarship and junior Karen Tew, was awarded the $100 third place runner-up scholarship. Freshman, Amber Nalls, was the recipient of the Jessica Reed and Family Community Service Award along with $100.        

According to this year’s pageant coordinator, Teresa Bryant, the pageant will include good competition and talent.  “We just expect a good pageant this year, we have nine wonderful contestants,” said Bryant.  The theme for this year’s pageant is “Catch the Rhythm.”

According to Bryant, nine contestants were narrowed down from the initial 21 that applied. 

The nine contestants are:

•Rhonda Curry is a freshman from Ft. Washington, Md., who plans to major in criminology. Her talent is violin performance and her platform is Supporting Less Fortunate Children in South Africa.

•Colleen Fink is a senior public relations major from Laurinburg, N.C.  Her talent is clogging and her platform is Breast Cancer Awareness and Education.

•Jamee Hunt is a junior biology major from Rowland, N.C.  Her talent is vocal performance and her platform is Drop-out Prevention.

•Angeleen Leonard is a sophomore zoology major from Franklinton, N.C. Her talent is dance performance and her platform is Helping Endangered Species from Extinction.

•Sabrina Leshore is a freshman from Charlotte, N.C., planning to major in psychology. Her talent is vocal performance and her platform is Positive Role Models.

•Deidra Locklear is a senior mass communication major from Pembroke, N.C.  Her talent is vocal performance and her platform is Commit to be Fit.

•Patricia Lugo is a freshman from Hope Mills, N.C. Her talent is cello performance and her platform is No Child Left Behind.

•Amber Nalls is a freshman from Lumber Bridge, N.C., who is planning to major in nursing. Her talent is mime and singing and her platform is Helping Girls Find Their Inner Beauty.

•Karen Tew is a junior nursing major from Laurinburg, N.C.  Her talent is drama and her platform is Leukemia Awareness.

The contestants will be judged in competitions such as interviews, evening wear, swimsuit and talent.            
           
“We’re excited about the pageant and anticipate this to be one of our largest pageants in a long time, and we encourage students to attend and enjoy the event,” said Director of the Office of Student Activities Robert Cooper. 

“There will be guest performances by Mr. Lumbee 2006 Vee Oxendine and Outstanding Teen North Carolina, Ciara Newman,” said Bryant.            

Miss UNCP 2006 Jorgiana Martin will give her farewell performance and crown Miss UNCP 2007.

The pageant will be held at Givens Performing Arts Center, Jan. 25. at 7 p.m.
