Canida advises diverse student organizations

Whether his face has been seen at campus events, as an advisor or teaching a freshman seminar class, Robert Canida is well known on the campus of  UNCP.

Canida is the director of the Office of Multicultural and Minority Affairs.

Canida, a Cincinnati, Ohio native, made his way to Pembroke over 11 years ago, when UNCP was known as Pembroke State University.

Before coming to Pembroke, Canida first received his B.A. degree from Xavier University in Ohio, and M.L.S. from the University of Kentucky.

Although he was first employed as Head of Circulation in the university library, he quickly made his way to the Multicultural Center.

Canida, along with groups of volunteers, students and staff, works everyday striving to provide programs and activities that enhance the educational, personal, cultural and social development of diverse student populations.

“The center is for everyone. A place of inclusion, cultural appreciation and a celebration of differences” Canida said.

On top of his role as the director, Canida has several roles on the UNCP campus and in the community.

He presently is the advisor to the African-American Student Organization, The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, National Pan-Hellenic Council and co-advisor to the 10% Society and the Latin American Student Organization.

Furthermore, Canida is the acting advisor to the United Ministries Council, Negro Women’s Council and Vice-President of the Pembroke Area of Commerce.
