Play explores college life

The play "The First Semester" captures the intensity of the lives of five university students during their first semester in college. Their relationships, choices, decisions and consequences all lead them down different paths, some positive and some negative.

The lives of the main characters intertwine throughout the play, sometimes touching each other and at other times fueling conflicts. All the issues the characters face in the play are those that affect the lives of the average college student.
One character's choices lead to his untimely death from binge drinking.
Another character's choice to help a friend who has been raped ends in a young romance.
The issues touched upon in the play range from sexual assault to questions about religion, drug dealing, racism and homosexuality.
This play was considered a part of UNCP's Black History Month celebrations, although it deals with contemporary issues and is relevant to all people. The actors skillfully wove comedy, drama, and realism together, making the play both entertaining and thought-provoking.
The Public Awareness Theatre, Inc. out of Detroit, Mich. performed the play in Moore Hall on Feb. 13.
The group will perform this play at approximately 130 campuses during their tour this year and will return to UNCP next semester to perform a play with more religious themes.
