Community honors Dr. King

More than 100 students, faculty, staff, administrators and community members gathered outside the Chavis University Center on Jan. 17 for a candlelight march to Sampson-Livermore library for a memorial service honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Two-by-two students marched into the stillness of the library to give thanks to a man that died to set a people, and a nation, free.
"I believe Dr. King would be proud of UNCP and the great strides we've made toward promoting and embracing diversity," Chancellor Allen C. Meadors said. "I encourage each of you to consider, remember and embrace Dr. King's message because, that is the essence of the man."
Echoing the Chancellor's thoughts was NAACP representative Mike McMillian who urged the audience to revel in Dr. King’s many accomplishments for humanity.
The African American Student Organization (AASO) sponsored the event, and through prayer, song and reverent words of remembrance showed their gratitude and respect to a man that had a dream of equality for all.
"The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy."
