issues, famous stage stars
When the Tony
award-winning Broadway
production “Avenue Q”
came to GPAC on Nov.
16, the house was filled
with people of all ages
wanting to see the show
that had been promoted as
controversial. A parental
advisory was attached to
all promotional materials
and advertisements for
“Avenue Q,” making
some curious as to what
exactly the show was
about.
Nearly 1,000 patrons
got that opportunity as the
production unfolded as
part of the Broadway and
More Series. “Avenue Q”
revolves around puppets,
handled by performers,
discussing topics of interest
that could be considered
controversial by
society including gay
rights, sex before marriage,
racism and pornography.

• Old Main marks 30 years after destructive fire
On Oct. 22 in the
Native American
Resource Center, the Old
Main building was honored
with an anniversary
celebration marking 30
years re-opened after
nearly being destroyed by
fire in 1973.
Old Main is the oldest
building and first permanent
brick structure built
on campus. It has proven
itself to be a symbol of
pride and strength within
the Native American community.

More than 1,000 fans of all ages watched in amazement as 68-year-old rock and roll icon Chubby Checker worked his way through nearly two hours of the biggest dance hits of the 1960s on Sept. 11 at 8 p.m. in GPAC.
“I’m the wheel that rock rolls on,” Checker said.

• Nye inspires sold out crowd to ‘change the world’
When seven-time Emmy award winner Bill Nye walked onto the GPAC stage on Sept. 8 at 7:45 p.m., he was welcomed by a sold-out crowd that applauded for more than a minute and gave him the first of what would be two standing ovations. Nye was appearing as the kick-off speaker for the 2009-2010 Distinguished Speaker Series.
