Lady Braves left out of PBC voting

The Peach Belt Conference announced the women's soccer preseason All-Conference team on Aug. 20 as voted on by the league's sports information directors.

Columbus State's Stephanie Parrish, Monica Sanchez, Kellie Myles, and Sarah Hawkins made the team, making them the most selections for any single school.

Three players from Armstrong Atlantic State, two from Georgia College & State, and one each from North Georgia and Lander round out the preseason All-Conference team.

Despite numerous candidates, including returning points leader Alex McManus, UNCP did not have a single player named to the PBC all-conference preseason team.

UNCP lost its main scoring threat, Lefke Boysen, to graduation. Boysen led the Black and Gold last season with 14 goals and 19 starts.

The Braves will look to improve on last season’s respectable 12-6-1 record, including a 3-4-1 mark in conference play. UNCP opens the regular season at home on Sept. 5 against Pfeiffer, an opponent that is expected to be top notch this season. In the Black and Gold’s exhibition opener against Division-1A participant Campbell on Aug. 23, UNCP’s Melanie Cobb scored the Braves only goal in a 1-1 draw. Athlete of the week

Cobb, a 5th-year senior who returned to UNCP after a one-year hiatus away from Pembroke, tallied 26 shots, three goals and one assist in leading UNCP to a perfect 2-0 record in the opening weekend of the 2008 women's soccer schedule.

Cobb took a school record 13 shots both at St. Andrews and against Limestone at home, scoring twice (including the game-winner) against the Lady Knights in a 3-0 triumph.

Cobb then matched her own school record for shots against the Lady Saints and added a 34th minute goal and an assist in an equally impressive 3-0 home-opening win.

Including her freshman season at Mount Olive, Cobb has 127 career points on 56 goals and 15 assists.

She has scored 28 goals in three seasons at UNCP.

Cobb will remain an offensive threat for Black and Gold soccer this season as UNCP tries to capture the PBC title.
