Buffum brings air attack to Black and Gold football The Pine Needle sits down with UNCP’s Rachel Young to discuss team goals and the volleyball star’s upcoming sophomore season By J. Matt Smith “I think from the moment they started Pembroke football, the University had a vision of what they were trying to do and that was one of the things that attracted me to this program,” Buffum said. “I saw this as a very good opportunity to come in and contribute for a very good football program and I look forward to doing that.” As a player, Buffum began at Williamette and Linfield Universities in Oregon but had his breakout season at Azusa Pacific in 1998. Buffum threw for 3,053 yards and 23 touchdowns while leading APU to a 12-2 record and the 1998 NAIA national title. Following his successful season as a player at Azusa Pacific, Buffum joined the APU coaching staff under then head coach, and current UNCP head coach, Pete Shinnick. After a successful stint at APU, Buffum took over the head coaching position at San Clemente High School in San Clemente, Calif., and led the Tritons to the state semifinals, their longest playoff run in the school’s 44-year history. For the past five years, Buffum coached the Swarco Raiders of the Austrian Football League. Buffum won Austrian League championships with the Raiders in 2004 and 2006 and won Euro Bowl XXIII last season. Buffum brings championship level knowledge to Black and Gold football and combines that expertise with coach Shinnick. UNCP will mix it up on offense this season with Buffum’s passing playbook.
