Braves shutout Limestone Courtesy of UNCP Sports Information With the win, UNCP improves to 4-1-0 over Limestone all-time and 2-0-0 this season. Similar to the 3-0 win Aug. 28 against St. Andrews, the team came out strong and took to the offensive, forcing the Saints to play most of the game on their heels. Freshman scorer UNCP freshman Britney Joiner used her speed and a well-placed pass from sophomore Faye Corbett to break away into a one-on-one situation with Limestone goalkeeper Diane Boyce. Joiner netted the first goal of her collegiate career seconds later. “Britney has done all the right things that a freshman should do,” UNCP coach Lars Andersson said. “She played nine minutes in the season opener, but she’s worked hard. Today, she got behind the ball and played defense. She was the unanimous player of the match.” Senior Melanie Cobb scored her third goal of the season off of her own shot deflection in the 34th minute. Corbett, who has two assists to her credit this season, added a goal when she pounded a shot past Boyce in the second half to bring the score to a commanding 3-0 margin. Twelve players combined to record 44 shots - the most for UNCP in a game since Aug. 29, 2006, when the Braves tallied 47 against Coker. History made Additionally, Cobb inked her name into history for a second time as she tied her own school record for shots in a game at 13, which she set Thursday at St. Andrews. The Peach Belt Conference record currently stands at 15. “We had a much better performance than we did at St. Andrews,” said Andersson. “We’re still not finishing as well as we should, but we’re doing a very good job at creating a lot of opportunities.” Win over Knights All 21 players on the traveling roster recorded minutes as the Braves opened the 2008 season with a dominating 3-0 win over the St. Andrews Lady Knights Aug. 28 at Knights Soccer Field. On a night when the offense shone brightly, the Lady Braves (1-0-0) outshot the Knights (0-1-0) 25-6 and four separate players contributed with assists. “It’s always good to get the season off with a win,” UNCP head coach Lars Andersson said. “Obviously, we did a good job creating scoring opportunities as we recorded 25 shots. However, we need to be more effective at capitalizing on those opportunities by scoring points.”
