UNCP set to build first water tower By Abbigail Overfelt “The water pressure on campus will not increase as our water distribution system is designed for a constant pressure of around 70 psi, but the purpose of the tower is to help maintain constant pressure and to ensure that sufficient water is available should one of the sprinkler systems be activated in a building,” said Bess Tyner, director of Facilities Planning and Construction. According to University Project Manager Cary Jacobs, the watertower will have a total capacity of .5 million gallons, but only about 250 will be used until further expansion happens. “We’re okay now, but the water tower will ensure that we will remain within the guidelines even with expansion,” he said. The tower will be tear-dropped shaped and approximately 170 feet high. Tyner said that the University was in the process of talking to the UNCP digital academy about a graphic design for the tower. Located at the North end of campus near the Pinchbeck building, the tower’s pipes will tie into the water line on Prospect Road before running along the north side of Village Apartments and following the complex down the west side. Jacobs said that although some work would have to be done near the edge of the intramual field, Facilities Management will try to consult with Dr. Tom Corti, vice chancellor of the office of student development, to coordinate construction to disturb intramural sports as little as possible. The work will be bid to general contractors, as is the case with all the University’s major construction. Bidding will be open on Sept. 25. The schedule will be determined after the project is successfully rewarded and under contract.
