Chancellor’s box nears completion By Abbigail Overfelt By Brad Crawford The press box will feature a Chancellor’s area with 18 chairback stadium seats, multiple spaces for team coordinators and radio crews, fully accessible rest rooms and an elevator leading from the ground to the upper level. Director of Facilities Planning and Construction Bess Tyner said that the press area should be available for use when the Braves play Jacksonville on Sept. 20. “The only delays we have had have been due to weather - we’ve had more than the usual rain amounts during the construction period and this delayed the foundation a bit, but otherwise we are doing well,” Tyner said. The work is being accomplished by General Contractor Player’s Construction of Fayetteville, N.C. Project manager Brian Hecke said that while most of the work has been divided among several subcontractors, the company has been in charge of quality control, clean-up and supervision. “The biggest challenge has been working to meet the football season and working around the existing bleachers,” Hecke said. Hecke went on to say that while the company has worked on a press box before, the First Bank Chancellor’s Box is the nicest facility they have constructed. “I think the press box is going to be a great addition to our stadium,” Braves head coach Pete Shinnick said during a press conference on Aug. 15. “I think it really creates a stamp on the University even if you’re just driving by,” he added. The original press area in 2007 was created above the visitor’s stands, overlooking the sideline. It held both UNCP and opposing school’s sports information services and broadcast crews. Broadcast personalities Don Koonce and?Trey?Edge will call games on WFVL 106.9 FM.
