Dr. Robert O. Schneider, Department Chair, Dr. Nicholas A. Giannatasio, Program Director
Graduation: Graduation was held on May 8th and the MPA program celebrated with 16 graduates, our largest graduating class. Coupled with our 6 graduates in the Fall, this academic year 22 students graduated from the MPA program. This is a tremendous accomplishment for our students, but especially for our program and the faculty. Now our thoughts turn to “refilling” the program with new students. It is hoped that by the Fall semester we will have closed the gap by half and certainly by the end of the calendar year we should be back to (or surpassed) our Fall 2003 enrollment.
Having 22 students graduate from our program is a form of advertising for our MPA program. These 22 graduates will go back to their workplaces and talk of the wonderful and challenging experiences they’ve had at UNCP. As more people find out about the MPA at UNCP more will come…Just like “Field of Dreams,” if we graduate them, they will come.
MPA on TV: During the week of May 16th, graduates students (on campus for an immersion class) and Dr. Giannatasio, were actors in upcoming commercials for UNCP’s graduate programs. The commercials will air on Raleigh/Fayetteville local stations during the month of June.
Summer Immersion Courses: The first Summer immersion course took place the week of May 16th and was a tremendous success. There were 33 students in the class and course work will be completed by June 4th. The second immersion class will take place during the week of July 11th. We anticipate over 30 students in that class as well.
Pi Alpha Alpha: Our Honor Society induction dinner was held on April 28th and 30 students, alumni and faculty were inducted. The dinner was held in the Chancellors’ dinning room. The guest speaker was Dr. Robert Schneider who reminded inductees of their commitment to Public Administration and to government-at-large.
Dr. Frank Trapp: Dr. Trapp will be leaving UNCP and taking a position at Methodist College in Fayetteville. While we are sorry to see Dr. Trapp leave, we wish him much success and happiness at Methodist.
MPA in China:
China University of Mining and Technology (CUMT): We are progressing steadily toward awarding the MPA degree at December graduation for CUMT students. Dr. Schneider will be traveling to China (with Mrs. Schneider) in early June to teach MPM 550 Public Institutions and Processes (core). Dr. Barbee’s class–Organizational Behavior, MPM 501--will be taught on-line by Dr. Thompson. The date for the on-line course is to be arranged, but most likely will begin August 2nd. This will be followed by Drs. Broschied and Hawthorne who will both present their course on-site at CUMT in August and September respectively.
Harbin Normal University (HNU): Dr. Robert Schneider will go to Harbin Normal University in June following his course at CUMT. His trip will be followed by Dean Hilton. It is expected that Dr. Schneider will present an overview of the MPA to prospective students and review faculty there for adjunct course work. Dr. Hilton will review admissions procedures during her trip to Harbin.
Newsletter Announcement: Please announce to your classes that the Newsletter is posted on the MPA website at www.uncp.edu/mpa then click on “News and Events.” This issue will be the final issue for this academic year. Volume II will begin in the Fall.
Have a safe and enjoyable Summer!
