about us

Our view of Public Administration as A Profession

Public administration is a rewarding and challenging profession that is pursued in political and economic environments that are both dynamic and volatile. Practitioners wishing to excel in the field must continually adapt and improve by updating basic knowledge and skills while learning new and emerging theories and techniques. The public expects better performance from public and non-profit organizations. It is up to the Public Administration profession to develop top quality managers in these sectors

Our View of Public Administration as an Academic Discipline

UNCP’s Master of Public Administration (MPA) program is committed to training current and future leaders and managers in the public and non-profit sectors. The university, department, and faculty members are all dedicated to providing an academic environment that supports, develops, and promotes professionalism and excellence in all areas that impact the quality of public service delivery (and non-profits, public-private partnerships, and other organizations). We value quality instruction, rigorous scholarship, diverse opinions and perspectives, substantive and meaningful interaction and collaboration, ethical behavior, creative thinking, and innovation.

Our Blend(ing) of the Profession and Academic Discipline

The curriculum is designed to serve multiple audiences via on-campus and online instruction. In either case the intent is not simply to provide pre-service and in-service students with a foundation in public management. Instead, we seek to reinvent students by challenging the familiar while introducing the unfamiliar. This is the objective of UNCP’s MPA program.
