RE:  Approach to Taking the Mathematics Placement Test and the Interpretation of its Results

Students often times take the Mathematics Placement Test with little understanding of how to approach the taking of this test or of how helpful the results can be in scheduling freshman mathematics courses.

  1. This test allows for the use of any type of personal calculator. The University will not provide these calculators; you must provide your own. The use of a calculator is not essential to successful testing, however.
  2. The test score is simply a statistical prediction of your success in different levels of mathematics courses at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke. Except for MAT 0104, you and your advisor have the final decision as to the course you will take. However, it is to your advantage to take the course predicted for you.
  3. Incorrect responses do not penalize you, but several correct responses which were "stab-in-the-dark" guesses may give an unrealistic evaluation of your mathematics ability. For this reason, knowledgeable guessing (narrowing the choices to two) is encouraged, while random guessing is not.
  4. The only test score that actually places you (with no choice) is the one predicting MAT 0104. This course is designed for those students who have previously been unsuccessful in mathematics, or for those students who, for whatever reason, need either a review of or an introduction to pre-college mathematics.

The test is not a long one, but it can be very important to you in the consideration of your freshman mathematics courses, as well as in time saved going through drop-add.

Get a good night's sleep and good luck with the test.
