Advisement
New freshmen are advised by the staff of the Office of Advisement and Retention when registering for first semester courses, after which time they will be assigned faculty advisors. In most cases, Freshman Seminar instructors become their students’ advisors. When a student declares a major, he or she will be assigned an advisor in the appropriate academic department. The advisor’s role is to assist the student in planning a suitable academic program and to maintain a record of progress during the student’s college career. However, the final responsibility for meeting all academic program requirements lies with the student. The Center for Academic Excellence also serves as a resource center for students who may wish to seek additional academic help. In addition, faculty members may refer students to the Center for Academic Excellence for academic counseling (UNCP Academic Catalog, 2007-2008, p. 48).
The Department of Nursing takes the responsibility of advisement very
seriously as we believe advising students will lead to successful completion
of the requirement for the BSN. The department plans to open an Advisement
and Retention Office on the campus of Southeastern Regional Medical Center
(SRMC), where the pre-licensure program is based. The goal of this office
is to provide a support system specifically for pre-nursing students as
well as students enrolled in the nursing program.
