Baseball Scratch Mountain Lions in 3 Straight
By John Hernly, Staff Writer
On the weekend of March 28 and 29, the UNCP baseball team faced off against Young Harris in a three game PBC series. The Braves dominated the Mountain Lion’s in all three games as they swept the series.
The Black and Gold found major success all weekend with their pitching and hitting. Young Harris struggled to find any momentum during part of the series.
To start the three game series the Braves played one of their strongest games of the season.
The Black and Gold went on to score 12 runs and allowed the Mountain Lion’s only to score one run in the contest. UNCP’s Wes Helsabeck got the start for the Braves and gave the team an amazing performance.
In eight innings of pitching Helsabeck struck out eight batters, allowed only six hits and only one run.
Another key to the Black and Gold’s success was that the team got 17 hits with nine RBIs.
The game was relatively low scoring until the seventh inning of play. Leading 4-0, the Braves added seven total runs in the inning. Collins Cuthrell was a key contributor in the seventh inning when he hit a three-run home run to left field.
UNCP went on to score one more run and beat the Mountain Lion’s 12-1 in game one.
The second game of the series was fairly competitive as Young Harris tested the Braves. However, the effort was not enough for Young Harris as they lost 12-5.
UNCP were the first to get on the scoreboard when they scored two runs in each of the first two innings.
Christian Snider hit a two-RBI double down the right field line in the first inning. In the second, Dalton Knight hit a single that scored two.
After adding another run in the fourth inning the Braves had a 5-0 lead. That was erased in the top of the fifth inning when the Mountain Lion’s scored five quick runs.
The Black and Gold answered right back in the sixth inning with two runs. Now having a 7-5 lead the Braves added more runs in the seventh with a five run scoring burst.
Young Harris failed to make up the deficit and lost the second game of the series.
Heading into the third game on March 29 the Braves had 2-0 lead over the Mountain Lion’s in the series.
The Black and Gold continued their dominance with a 8-1 win to clinch the three game sweep.
UNCP’s Connor Pratt got the start for the Braves in game three. Pratt provided a five hit, four strikeout and one earned run performance.
Unlike the first two games of the series, the Braves failed to score first. Young Harris scored the first run of the game in the second inning. After that run the Braves did not allow the Mountain Lion’s to score again.
