Basketball's Offense Leads to Key Wins

Basketball's Offense Leads to Key Wins Basketball 1

By Jonathan Bym, Editor

Defense was not a factor in the UNCP men’s basketball team’s wins over Flagler and Armstrong on the road on Feb. 18 and 21.

The offenses put on a show in those games as the Braves won two shootouts with a 105-91 win over Flagler, and a 115-92 victory against Armstrong State.

The first half of the contest proved to be the difference as the Braves took a 52-38 halftime lead, and maintained the lead to close out the contest.

Keysheen Hinton had a game-high 23 points off the bench, and was helped out with another strong bench performance from Ben Jacobs with 22 points.

Tyler Kordenbrock also had 14 points in the game on 6-of-10 shooting.

Midway through the first half, UNCP broke a 12-12 tie with a 20-7 run capped off with a layup from Brandon Winford.

After that, the lead was trimmed down to nine, but the Saints were unable to close the gap any closer before halftime.

After halftime, Hinton saw his best half going 7-of-8 from the field to score 16 points and holding off the Saints who made runs, but were unable to get within 10 points of the UNCP lead.

He scored all 16 over the final 8:12 of the game.

The Braves shot over 62 percent from the floor in the contest and had a 12-rebound advantage over the Saints.

Another big first half fueled the Braves to another win over Armstrong State.

UNCP shot 71 percent in the first half and held the Pirates to 39 percent to jump ahead 59-35 after the first half.

During the second half, the Braves cooled off and Armstrong took advantage scoring 57 points.

Winford had a team-high 22 points to pace the Braves to the victory.

Brandon Watts added 21 points.

Watts drained a jump shot with 5:39 remaining to push the UNCP lead to 39-23.

The lead grew quickly to 20 points as Winford hit two free throws with 2:40 left in the first half.

In the second half, Armstrong was unable to get any closer than 19 points.

Jonathan Blair had 28 points off the bench for Armstrong.
